Subliminal Messages

Brainpower Newsletter

Sunday, January 21, 2007

I'm letting someone else do the lead article this week. While I'm not entirely convinced that subliminal messages are as powerful as many claim, I think you'll find the technique suggested in the following article interesting.

Boost your Life with Subliminal Messages - For Free!

By Bradley Thompson

The U.S. Government banned them on TV and radio in 1974. They were once famously used to boost sales of popcorn by almost 60%. And today, they're the subject of numerous Derren Brown-style "mind" shows airing throughout the globe.

I'm talking, of course, about subliminal messages.

However despite all the media hype, subliminal messages aren't just used by advertising moguls trying to get us to buy another can of coke. They can also be employed to make serious and lasting change in our own lives.

In this short article, I'm going to share a method you can use to get subliminal messages working for you - starting tonight!

But before we begin, let's ask...

Did You Know...

- Contrary to the common belief, ostriches do not bury their heads in the sand. There is no reported case of this.

- The first man-made item to exceed the speed of sound was the bull whip. The knotted end makes a popping noise when snapped. This is actually a tiny sonic boom from exceeding the speed of sound.

- The Amazon has the greatest flow of water of any river, discharging over 7 million gallons per second into the Atlantic ocean (over 12 million when flooding).

Meditation News

Meditation is often seen as a relaxation technique. But Giuseppe Pagnoni, PhD, at Emory University School of Medicine says that meditation is more mental training than relaxation. It is training one's attention and inhibitory control:

"We chose to investigate Zen meditation because, from an experimental point of view, it is a very simple technique, the quintessence of many other meditative variations...We believe that people who have undergone a rigorous training in Zen meditation might display a functional modification of the neural circuits underlying the performance of attentional control and behavioral switching."

Researchers at the university plan to use fMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to look at the brain. They hope to see which specific areas of the brain are activated during meditation. I'll report on the results when they are in.

This Week's Page Reminder

(A reminder of useful pages you may have missed.)

Who Cares What Your IQ Is?

Would you like to know what your IQ is? Want to improve it? What is IQ anyhow? The American Heritage Dictionary defines Intelligence Quotient as "The ratio of tested mental age to chronological age, usually expressed as a quotient multiplied by 100." Basically, it's a test of intelligence, with 100 as the average score. There are some problems with IQ tests however.

A recent IQ test asked which of four fruits was different. It was the one with more than one seed; but what if you were not familiar with these fruits? Obviously this test is culturally biased. You are assumed to have certain knowledge, yet you are being tested for intelligence, not knowledge.

Now look at these letters: "ANLDEGN." Rearrange them and you'll have the name of a(n): Ocean, Country, State, City or Animal. This is from an IQ test I took. Hmm.. very few oceans, so I could eliminate those - but wait a second! That's a...

Riddle Answer: A. Anytime you increase something by half, and then decrease it by a third, you end up where you started. Plug some numbers into this and it is easy to see. (40 increased by half is 60. Then take away a third of 60 and you are back to 40.)
