I have always been a bit of a philosopher at heart, which explains why I wrote this week's article on "big questions."
Enjoy the newsletter!
If you have ever pondered the big questions, like "What is the meaning of life?" or "Why do we feel motivated to do good?" you may have noticed that doing so really takes no more brainpower than balancing your checkbook. And although you are more likely to be satisfied and certain with the result of the checkbook balancing, thinking about these things is not just good brain exercise. This kind of thinking gives you insight and perspective.
But how do you think about these big questions of life? What do you do...

- First word spoken by a human on the moon? "Okay."
- "Coprolalia" is involuntary bad language. It is one symptom of Tourette's syndrome (affecting just 10% of those who have the syndrome).
- There is a correlation between the amount of zinc and copper
found in people's hair and their level of intelligence. Those
with higher IQ have more of both metals. But it isn't clear that
increasing these minerals will increase your intelligence.
Would you like to easily come up with dozens of creative solutions to almost any kind of problem? Then buy a copy of "Problem Solving Power" (This one is my own book). Iron For Memory
Many studies suggest that having more iron in your diet can help improve both concentration and short-term memory. Medical researcher Dr. David Williams recommends 10 to 15 milligrams of elemental iron a day. He also suggests a simpler solution: using iron cookware regularly.
Without looking, what is on the wall behind you? Which is your second longest finger? Which light is red on a stoplight (top or bottom)? Our memories of scenes and situations are not "photos," but created ideas. We "recognize," things but do not consciously remember in any photographic sense. Hence, you probably cannot list everything that is on the wall behind you, but you will notice if something is missing.
"Memory is the medium of the must-have-been." - Julian Jaynes
This was just a bit to get you thinking. I hope to have more on the nature of memory in future newsletters.

A memory trick to try is to sniff a floral scent as you first learn something. This can help concentration initially, and so set the information more firmly in your mind. Then, when you need to recall the information in the future, sniff the same odor again. It should help with recalling it.

Good quality sleep is important to the functioning of your brain. Short naps can be a part of that, but you can't let them get too long, as Kacper Postawski explains in the article below.
Power Naps - What Most People Don't Know About Naps
One of the biggest questions I get asked all the time is "Are naps good for you? Or bad? I've heard both sides of the story." I'd like to settle this argument once and for all right here...

Metaphors are powerful tools for understanding things. "Tools," of course, is a metaphor. I could have said "way of understanding things," or "method." Each word or expression conveys a slightly different meaning, and gets you thinking in different ways. Use this power of metaphors to solve problems more creatively.
If you're an "employee," you'll think about your job in a certain way. An "associate," might feel more important and think differently about his duties. If you're a "business," selling your labor, then your "boss" becomes just a "customer." You can raise your prices, change your service, or look for...
