Intention

Brainpower Newsletter

Sunday, May 27, 2007

With "The Secret" and the other recent reincarnations of the "power of positive thinking" out there, I had to give my take on how our thoughts help us get what we want. That's the topic of the first item in this issue of the newsletter.

**********************************************

The Power Of Intention

The power of intention is the latest reincarnation of the "power of positive thinking" idea. But does it work? Perhaps - as long as the goal is more important to you than the idea.

You see, intention alone won't get you where you want to go. In fact, the new age writers on the power of intention seem to have forgotten the very insightful saying that "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." Contrary to what they say, the universe may not give a damn what your intentions are.

If the universe doesn't care about you or your thoughts, can the "positive thinking" or other ways to focus your thoughts help you get what you want in life? Yes, because there are other reasons why it matters what you think and what you intend to have happen. This is why...

More Solutions

Remember that last week's challenge was to use the digits 1 through 9 in order, using only addition or subtraction, to create an equation that equals 100. The solution given was 12+3-4+5+67+8+9=100. Here are a few more sent in by readers:

123 + 45 - 67 + 8 - 9 = 100 (Thanks Jeff)

1 + 2 + 3 - 4 + 5 + 6 + 78 + 9 = 100 (Thanks Yunus)

1 + 2 + 34 - 5 + 67 - 8 + 9 = 100 (Thanks JT)

12 + 3 + 4 + 5 - 6 - 7 + 89 = 100 (Thanks Roni)

And if we allow a start with the minus sign:

- 1 + 2 - 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 78 + 9 = 100 (Thanks Don)

Did You Know...

- The Madagascar Hissing Cockroach gives birth to live young, rather than laying eggs.

- An epidemic among animals is called an epizootic.

- Humans and black lemurs are the only primates with blue eyes.

Human-Brained Mice

Irving Weissman, a researcher at Stanford University, recently obtained permission to make a mouse-human hybrid. He intends to inject human brain cells into mice, to see what develops. The committee that approved the proposal says that if the mouse shows too many human-like behaviors, the experiment will be stopped. More on this in future newsletters.

This Week's Riddle

What is the longest English word with just one vowel?

(answer below)

This Week's Brainpower Practice

Omega-3 fatty acids can help keep blood vessels in the brain clear of blockages and allow nerve cells to function at a high level. Eating fish twice a week or take an omega 3 supplement to keep your levels up. As you may recall from a previous newsletter, eating fish actually speeds up the signals in the brain as well.

(Here's a real-life example of application of that brainpower.)

Charting a Roulette Wheel

(One of the many jobs I had over the years was as a casino dealer. The following story is an example of putting that brainpower to use. The whole story can be found in Chapter 19 of my e-book "You Aren't Supposed To Know - A Book Of Secrets".)

John (not his real name) came in initially with two friends, as he explained to me. They took turns "charting" the wheel. This is nothing more than writing down the number that comes up on every spin. They did this for weeks on both roulette wheels in the casino. It is an incredibly boring and crucial part of the process, often amounting to nothing, since there may not be a bias.

You see, if the number eighteen comes up ten times in a hundred spins, it is meaningless. The sample is too small. You need to know if the bias is real, and therefore will continue, or is just a statistical fluke. Without getting into probability theory and a discussion of standard deviations, suffice it to say that if you want to be fairly certain the bias is "real," you need a sample of about 5,000 spins or more. They eventually had 15,000 spins recorded in a little notebook.

As it turned out, the number "0" was coming in 1-in-28 spins. This surpassed the 1-in-33 threshold they needed to make it safe and worth their while. Only John had the patience, though, to continue sitting there night after night, placing one bet on one number, over and over. Within a couple weeks, his friends quit. They didn't have the patience required, and probably also didn't like the fact that even with the odds in their favor, they had nights when they lost as much as $700.

So night after night John sat there discussing politics and philosophy with me and the other dealers, placing one bet on 0 for each spin of the wheel. He was making between $50 and $100 per hour depending on the number of spins per hour, and assuming the bias was consistent in the long run. Eventually, after more than a year, and $90,000 in profits for John, the casino got a new wheel.

If you want to try this yourself, here is the formula...

How To Quit Your Job

Why can I tell you how to quit your job? Let's just say that I am a job-quitting expert, and my expertise has been gained through experience. I have quit many jobs in many industries. Most recently, I quit my job at the Post Office, and now it has been over two years since I've had a job. Of course, the real question is "How do you quit your job and still pay the bills?" Here are some ideas, again based on experience.

Stop Thinking Like An Employee

People are afraid of their employers. They feel dependent on them. They even feel bitter or "trapped." Why think that way? Even if you stay at your present job twenty more years (there may be good reasons to), why not consider yourself a business owner, in the business of selling your labor? If you don't like the terms or price, you can negotiate a better deal or go elsewhere.

I once told a customer (employer) I would only work one day, down from five, because I had other plans for my time. They liked the service I sold, and so agreed. If they didn't...
