Tips on How to Concentrate

Those who have trouble staying focused at work, have trouble recalling important information, and realize they are suffering from poor concentration can benefit from learning how to concentrate. A healthy brain is one that is easily able to stay focused and give adequate attention to the tasks at hand. Someone who is able to focus is capable of ignoring distractions and finding a way to stay in the moment. These individuals have also mastered their ability to pay attention and get even the most tedious and boring tasks done. Try these tips to advance brain power and perk up cognitive execution.

Remove distractions

A lack of concentration is often the result of trying to do too many things at once. Watching TV while working on a school project on the computer, or reading a book and listening to the radio are examples of conflicting tasks. When multi-tasking on such issues, the brain is facing constant sensory overload and full comprehension is often impossible. To really understand how to concentrate you need to let the primary task be the only task in which you participate. Try working in a quiet environment, turning off your cell phone and cutting the TV off while trying to work. Practice good posture and work at desk, laying on the bed or the couch while make it much harder to stay alert.

Work through frustration

For those with poor concentration skills, frustration can often impact the ability to concentrate. When tasks are boring or you find it difficult to keep going, give yourself a time limit. Pledge to focus all of your attention and energy on working for five minutes at a time. Once those five minutes are up, repeat the process for another five minutes. By breaking up longer tasks into small increments, you can stretch your attention span and your mental endurance without feeling overwhelmed.

Make a to-do list

One common complaint from those who wonder how to concentrate is their inability to stay focused when they have multiple tasks to complete each day. To truly understand how much is on your plate, start off each day by making a to-do list. By being aware of what tasks you need to accomplish, you can better manage your time to understand how long to dedicate to individual activities. Check off or mark through each activity after completion, and track how much time each activity takes to complete. This will help you understand when you are wasting time and can motivate you to pick up the pace when needed.

Take care of your health

What you put into your body does not just affect your waistline it impacts your brain. Both excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption can affect brainpower and make it much more difficult to concentrate. Certain foods, however, are known for their brain boosting power; due to their high levels of antioxidants which enhance the brains ability to send and receive impulses. These brain enhancing foods also improve blood flow, a necessity for getting adequate amounts of oxygen to the brain which improves cognitive functioning. Some of the best brain boosting foods include blueberries, fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids and foods with high levels of Vitamin E such as olive oil and avocados.

Learning how to concentrate also means getting enough sleep; sleep helps boosts memory power and adequate sleep makes it easier to process information and remain focused. Exercise is also absolutely vital for improving attentiveness. Regular physical activity will help improve brain functioning and manage stress levels; excessive stress can have a huge distraction when attempting to concentrate. Mental workouts are also an important part of having a fit brain. Mental activities can improve the ability to problem solve, enhance lateral thinking, stretch the imagination and spark creativity. Some mental brain boosting tasks to try include jigsaw puzzles, math games and crossword puzzles.
