Learn New Things
Do you want to really boost your effective brain power? Learn
something new, and then something else, and then something
else. You'll have a more powerful mind, and develop a curiosity
that will keep you alive longer. Okay, the latter is just speculation.
The research only proves that people who continue learning, reading,
and writing, are sharper in their mental skills as they age.
Isn't that enough for now (until they prove the longer-life hypothesis)?
You probably think you don't have time to learn about whole
new subjects, but what if it took no extra time? Would you learn
a new language, take a course on negotiating, or study something
new and interesting? Well, you can start this week, by using
the dead-time in your day. That's all the time you spend sitting
in your car, or on the bus, or in the waiting room at the dentist's
office. So how do you use that time?
Could you learn something useful with four hours per
week of audio instruction for a year? What if the only extra
time it took was a few minutes to order tapes or CDs? If your
job is 25 minutes away, you spend over 200 hours per year in
your car just going to or from work.
Use that time to increase your brain power. You can check
out thousands of audio downloads, and even listen to samples
online, or you can stop by your local library to see what they
have in audio books. Invest a few minutes, and get hours of learning.
Note: Since this was written many years ago, the technology
has changed. While you can certainly still get audio books on
CD to listen to in your car, you can also now get downloads for
your MP3 player. This allows you to listen to a book almost anywhere.
You can knock off an hour of Spanish lessons, for example, while
doing yard work. You can listen to an entire book while flying
for business or pleasure. Try MP3 downloads for audio books,
and you can really use that time well.
